I’m a UKCP and BACP Registered Psychotherapist and Psychotherapeutic Counsellor, providing short- and long-term individual therapy to adults in Brighton and Hove. I also teach and research in the field of Counselling and Psychotherapy.
I approach my work with curiosity and integrity, bringing warmth, compassion, and authenticity to the therapeutic relationship. I work purposefully yet always collaboratively with clients. You can read more about my approach here.
Experience and training
I’m an experienced therapist, and have worked with a full range of issues, including complex cases. Beyond private practice, I’ve also treated counselling and psychotherapy clients in an NHS setting. I’ve worked successfully with a diverse range of clients, including members of the LGBTQ+ community, older clients, people living with disabilities and/or illness, neurodivergent clients, and other counsellors and therapists (both qualified and in training). You can read more about my areas of expertise here.
My four-year training programme was accredited by both the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) and the UKCP (UK Council for Psychotherapy). In the context of the SCoPEd (Scope of Practice and Education) framework, which was introduced by the major professional bodies to provide transparency regarding counselling and psychotherapy qualifications, I am aligned with Column C, which represents the highest level of training and experience within the framework.
Before setting up my private practice, I was a senior university lecturer in English Literature. My interest in language and storytelling persists in my therapeutic practice: I’m attentive to how we narrate our own lives, and the power held in our stories about ourselves and others. Many of my academic publications on literature demonstrate my longstanding interest in psychological and psychoanalytic concepts, including trauma.
Research and teaching
My research and teaching not only helps me to stay abreast of new developments in the field, but also allows me to keep returning to the fundamental ethical and theoretical principles that underpin humanistic integrative psychotherapy. This enables me to adopt a thoughtful, reflective, and sometimes critical stance in relation to my own practice and the field of therapy more generally. I spend time thinking carefully about why therapists work the way we do, and I believe this enables me to approach my clinical work with care and intention.
Ethical practice
I abide by the Codes of Ethics of the UKCP, the BACP and the Northern Guild for Psychotherapy. I maintain full professional indemnity insurance and am a registered data officer with the ICO. I have regular clinical supervision and engage in a variety of CPD activities, all of which are monitored in order to maintain professional accreditation.
